Farm Bureau AgriPac endorses candidates for 2010 primary election
LANSING, June 24, 2010 - AgriPac has announced its selection of candidates to receive the "Friend of Agriculture" designation and endorsement for the Aug. 3 primary election. The complete list follows. Click here for a PDF copy.
AgriPac is the non-partisan political action committee of the Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB), the state's largest general farm organization encompassing nearly a half-million voters. "Friends of Agriculture" represent qualified candidates who have demonstrated basic beliefs and/or actions consistent with farmer-developed MFB policy.
"To help Michigan rebound we need leaders who understand, appreciate and embrace agriculture's significant contributions to this state, both today and into the future. This kind of leadership is paramount to reforming state government and fixing Michigan's budget problems. That's why the Michigan Farm Bureau has made identifying and helping to elect Friends of Agriculture a priority in our Common Sense Solutions to Fix Michigan initiative," said Sarah Black, AgriPac secretary and director of the MFB Public Policy and Commodity Division.
In making endorsements for the 2010 primary election, AgriPac reviewed candidate questionnaires, voting records of incumbents, and recommendations from county Farm Bureaus, placing a high emphasis on the local recommendations of county Farm Bureau-appointed candidate evaluation committees. AgriPac also reviewed candidates' positions on key issues, including many addressed in MFB's government streamlining initiative such as state spending on corrections, human services and education.
In addition to U.S. House and Michigan House and Senate races, AgriPac made an early endorsement for Supreme Court incumbent Justice Robert Young and Michigan State University Board of Trustee incumbent Don Nugent.
A decision on the gubernatorial race and other statewide offices will not be made until AgriPac holds a statewide agricultural forum on Sept. 1 at the Lansing Center to interview and review candidates following the primary election and political conventions.
