Community Action Groups

Community Action Groups

This group of friends and neighbors meets monthly to discuss key issues affecting agriculture. Whether the issue is zoning, community planning, school finance, or even a neighborhood beautification project, a Community Action Group is the perfect tool to find solutions, gain knowledge, share ideas, and take action.

Then Ingham County Farm Bureau currently has four Community Action Groups: Baseline, Hardscrabble, Robbins, and Wonderwhats. Baseline meets in the Leslie area, Hardscrabble meets in the Mason area, Robbins meets in the Eaton Rapids area, and Wonderwhats meets in the Mason/Okemos area.

For more information about this program, call the Ingham County Office at (517) 676-5578.

Lansing Legislative Seminar

Lansing Legislative Seminar

Each year, Farm Bureau organizes face-to-face meetings with hundreds of Farm Bureau leaders and their respective elected officials. These annual "lobbying" missions are a key element in the Farm Bureau grassroots policy development and policy execution process.

In 2007 Bill Chamberlain, Gary Haynes, Jeanie Igl, Neil Kentner, Janet Lyon, Donald Oesterle, Jeff Oesterle, David Showers, Jake Wamhoff, Bill Wheeler, and Gary Wilcox attended for Ingham County.

Promotion & Education

Promotion & Education

The goal of the Promotion and Education program is to educate Michigan consumers about agriculture through working with children and schools and coordinating public outreach programs to promote and educate about agriculture. In addition, the Promotion and Education program strives to educate farmers on issues impacting agriculture.

We are very committeed to teaching our young people about the different phases of agriculture. In March or April each year, we hold Project RED (Rural Education Day), involving over 600 Ingham County third grade students.

We also have a "Little Red Barn" prgram that consists of a traveling barn with learning materials geared towards K-3rd graders and is available to all Ingham County schools.

Ag in the Classroom is another way for us to reach students from kindergarten all the way through fourth grade.

We are always seeking volunteer help to promote agriculture to the community. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Gladys Welker, Promotion & Education hair at (517) 676-9498.

Young People's Citizenship Seminar

Young People's Citizenship Seminar

Over two hundred twenty of the top students from Michigan convene each year in late June to learn about world economic and political systems and conduct their own mock election. Sponsored by county Farm Bureaus across the state, the Citizenship Seminar has been conducted for over 35 years and has provided leadership skills for over 5,000 of Michigan's youth.

Ingham County high school students Christopher Culham and Luke Feltz from Williamston and Elizabeth Ries and Nick Schilhan from Webberville attended this year's seminar in June of 2007.
