Farmers in the Thumb, and other areas, are already doing something about the nation's energy problems. Not only can they grow crops for both food and fuel, but they provide the land base for wind turbines. This scene was photographed near Ubly, site of the state's newest wind farm.

Wind energy prospects looking up

Since Michigan's lawmakers finally passed, in early October, a law requiring that the state get at least 10 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2015, it's become clear that wind turbines will be the monument of choice for the state's two largest utilities, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy.
