PETA funds eco-terrorists, group says

An investigation of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) documents conducted by the Center for Consumer Freedom found that over the last six years, the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has given "significant amounts of money" to support the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), the radical group that claimed responsibility for the New Year's Eve, 2000, fire at Michigan State University, among other violent actions. That fire caused more than $400,000 in damage to Agriculture Hall. ELF claimed in faxes to news organizations that it targeted the office of Catherine Ives, a visiting professor doing genetic engineering work with crops.

"People are being deceived by PETA's self-portrayal as a warm and cuddly animal rights organization," said Richard Berman, executive director of the Center for Consumer Freedom. "PETA should explain to their contributors why their money is being used to finance domestic terrorism."
