Lester Langeland
Farm Bureau honors Ottawa County member for lifetime service, dedication

In recognition of his outstanding efforts in building Ottawa County Farm Bureau’s membership, Coopersville-area farmer Lester Langeland has been recognized as Michigan Farm Bureau’s (MFB) Volunteer of the Month for June 2009.
Earlier this year Langeland headed up the county Farm Bureau’s annual membership campaign while also promoting local agriculture within and outside the farming community. He helped conduct a membership kickoff party that was “standing room only” to begin the effort, which ultimately resulted in 23 new members.
“We’ve reached our target every year since 1988 with Lester as our chairperson,” wrote his nominator for Volunteer of the Month honors. “Also, his involvement with public policy, county issues, policy development, candidate evaluation and land use has been a real benefit to our county.”
His nominator added that Langeland deserves recognition for a lifetime of dedication to Farm Bureau and Michigan agriculture. Even with the economic downturn, Langeland has gone out of his way to emphasize the importance of Farm Bureau membership to farmers in Ottawa County. His commendable service and dedication to the county Farm Bureau in this capacity earned Langeland and his co-chair Mark Schoenborn spots on the membership chairman’s trip in June.
Beyond his achievements in recruiting new members, Langeland has frequently represented the interests of Ottawa County farmers as a voting delegate at MFB’s State Annual Meeting. He also participates in a local Community Action Group and has often taken part in the organization’s Lansing Legislative Seminar, taking current agricultural issues straight to lawmakers.
Even though he officially retired from the operation in 1993, Langeland continues to farm every day with his sons Merle and Marlin. He and his wife Adrianna remain an active part of the family’s 2,700-acre farm, raising dairy and beef cattle as well as eggs, corn, wheat, soybeans and alfalfa.
